- One suspects that Marcos Davidson would have been a wonderful thespian had he not found success as a goldsmith and jeweller. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to Laszlo Puzsar, one Melbourne’s most renowned jewellers, a workshop of European and middle Eastern consumate craftsmen. As part of his apprenticeship he studied at Collingwood Tech and RMIT, silver and gold smithing. Marcos opened his first workshop/studio in the Block Arcade in 1979. Happily ensconced in a cosy corner studio on the 7th floor of the Art Deco Carlow House for the past 16 years, Marcus works exclusively on a commission basis. He is the one of the last bespoke goldsmiths in the country. Adept in most processes in his craft he develops a style to suit each piece requirement. Among the many materials he has utilized include, coral, titanium, electrum and particularly Bakelite, the world’s first plastic. A master stone setter, engraver, polisher, alloy maker and goldsmith. He makes most of his own tools and with his superlative hand skills can as easily repair a musical instrument for a friend or set a diamond in a tooth.
